Hours after the high tribunal voted on to nullify her appointment, ousted Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno spoke for the first time on live television.

Speaking to ABS-CBN News Channel's Karen Davila, the ousted top magistrate said the decision in favor of the quo warranto was "very unjust."

"But beyond that decision, I am firmly of the belief that God is in control of everything and so this only tells us that there is a bigger picture here, and that is that the fight for democracy, the truth, and accountability must continue. There must not be let up. There must not be hesitation on anybody's part to fight for the rights of our people," she said.

Asked how she was able to maintain her calmness despite having leakages of the decision days prior to the voting on Friday, Sereno said she is "not bothered by the fact that perhaps the Supreme Court may no longer be my platform" and that she feels "encouraged" by how people are responding to her.

"There is an awakening and perhaps when you come to think of it, what could be more important in the context of today's battle?" she said.

Asked if she would accept the decision despite it being unconstitutional — with law deans and experts arguing that the only way to remove her is through a Senate impeachment — Sereno said that she would have to study the ruling first.

"Hindi ko pa kasi nababasa. Gusto kong malaman ano 'yung basis. Paano nila naabot 'yung ganong konklusyon? Ang linaw sa lahat ng constitutionalists, ang maliban lang talaga doon sa mga mapagkakatiwalaang mga tao. 'Yung mga constitutionalists, unanimous sila. 'Yung mga law professors, unanimous sila [na] hiindi ka pwedeng magka-quo warranto para magremove ng impeachable official. At lalong-lalo na hindi ka pwedeng na ang sistema na naghuhusga sayo, 'yung nag-aakusa sa'yo. So, on so many levels, talagang masyadong hindi katangap-tangap ang desisyon na ito ngunit kailangan nating hinatayin at basahin ko muna," she said.
