Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Director General Ronald "Bato" Dela Rosa said that President Rodrigo Duterte's move to put the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) in charge of all anti-drug operations in the country was likely the result of his dwindling approval rating.

The police chief made this comment during a live guesting on CNN Philippines' morning talk show The Source on Friday.

"Siguro dahil dun sa kritisismo sa aming war on drugs at tsaka sa lumabas na survey na dumarami yung disastified sa kanya — yung trust rating niya bumaba. Baka dahil dun. Wala naman tayong nakikitang ibang rason dun kung bakit bumaba kundi yung mga criticisms sa ating war on drugs," Dela Rosa told host Pinky Webb.

The President's approval number fell sharply to its lowest level according to a recent survey by Social Weather Stations.

In the hour-long televised interview, the police chief also took shots at the media for the amount of coverage devoted to those killed in the course of the PNP's anti-drug campaign, which include 17-year-old Kian Delos Santos who was gunned down by police officers in Caloocan in August.

"Kasi ang mga tao naman marami rin naman silang nakitang ginagawa ng pulis. Eh kaso nga lang hindi kami masyadong binibigyan ng tyansa na ipakita yung mga ganun like for example yung mga pulis namin na namamatay sa drug operations, hindi pinapansin masyado pero yung mga drug pushers na namatay sa drug operations talagang binubuhusan ng tutok ng media. Nandun lahat ng attention. So the world is so unfair to us," he said.

According to Dela Rosa, Filipinos felt safer because of the government's war on drugs, noting his encounters with ordinary people in the streets.

"Hindi po ako nagbubuhat ng sariling bangko. This is about time na sabihin ko na rin yung totoong naramdaman ko. Totoong naexperience ko sa kalsada eh anywhere I go, people are very happy na nagsasabi sa akin, 'Sir, maraming salamat sa ginagawa ninyo. Maraming salamat po. Good luck po sa inyo. We are praying for you, Sir, na sana magtagumpay talaga kayo at matapos na itong problema natin.' Lahat halos ng taong lumalapit sakin ganun ang sinasabi," Dela Rosa said.

Asked about the PNP's new focus on riding-in-tandem criminals, Dela Rosa said that this will be based more on intelligence reports, adding that he has already sent directives to his regional directors about their new campaign.

"Dahil itong ginagawa nilang ito, this is the one pulling us down. Kasi iniisip ng mga tao na namamaril diyan eh pulis yan o kaya yung namamaril hindi nahuhuli dahil gusto nila yung nangyari na ganun. So gigil na gigil ako dito. So humanda kayo mga riding-in-tandem. Uubusin namin kayo," he said.
