Answering questions about his alleged unexplained wealth, Commission on Elections Chair Andres Bautista made the rounds on TV Monday, categorically denying all the allegations made by his wife Patricia against him.

As filed by Mrs. Bautista in an affidavit dated August 1, the Comelec chief is said to have engaged in "misleading and corrupt practices while in government service," saying that he might have amassed nearly 1 billion pesos worth of ill-gotten wealth.

Appearing on GMA-7's Unang Hirit, Mr. Bautista told anchor Ivan Mayrina that these accusations may be motivated by money, saying that his wife has been trying to extort money from him.

"Makikita niyo po pera lang po ito, puro pera dahil pataas po ng pataas po ang kanyang hinihingi na pera at lahat po 'yan ay nakadokumento at mayroon po tayong mga testigong ihahain. So sabi ko nga ito po ay isang kaso ng pangingingikil at pangigipit," Mr. Bautista said.

Asked what he intends to do next, Bautista told ANC's Annalisa Burgos that he is consulting his lawyers, adding that he remains "in close contact with my family members, and this is both from the Bautista side as well as her side."

"They know the entire situation. They know that in this situation, I am the victim. I am the victim of betrayal," he said. "I never thought a man could be raped. That is how I felt when I was prevented from entering my own house, when all of a sudden, the locked cabinets belonged to me were forced open, documents were taken without my consent."

As for any possible impeachment complaint against him, Mr. Bautista said that "it's always part and parcel of our terrain."

"If and when that happens, then I will have to face it," he said.

Aside from these two interviews, Mr. Bautista also spoke with DZMM's Gerry Baja on his program Garantisadong Balita, and with Pinky Webb on a special afternoon edition of her program The Source. A replay of that interview will air later at 7:30PM on CNN Philippines.
