In a debate dubbed by netizens as #PiliPinasDeLate, only one name came on top, and she was not even one of the candidates.

News5 Chief Luchi Cruz-Valdes, who moderated the much-awaited TV5 PiliPinas Debate on Sunday, drew widespread praise on social media for the way she handled the second leg of the national presidential debates.

By all standards, the debate didn't start off pretty well and had been delayed due to a major miscommunication between VP Jejomar Binay's camp and the TV5 team. Apparently, Cruz-Valdes herself allowed them to bring in notes and documents which was against the rules put in place by the COMELEC.

Right out of the gate, Cruz-Valdes took responsibility for the confusion, saying: "Mawalang galang na po. Ako po ay humihingi ng paumanhin publicly kay Mr. Vice President kasi po kami po ang nagbigay pahintulot po sa kanila na magdala ng notes. Iyan rin po ang dahilan kung bakit po naantala ang debateng ito."

From then on and throughout the entire debate, she demonstrated toughness and willingness to go after the candidates, i.e. asking Senator Grace Poe to stick to the debate rules during her face-off with Liberal Party's Mar Roxas.

Within and outside the industry, comments about her performance range from praises from her media colleagues — from the likes of ANC's Teddy Boy Locsin Jr., GMA-7's Lyn Ching Pascual and Love Añover, and ABS-CBN's Jeff Canoy — to memes created by netizens.

Whether her commanding performance at the debate gives her shows a boost in the ratings remain to be seen. For now, Cruz-Valdes has a lot of momentum moving forward as TV5's news chief.
