Solar News to be renamed News9?

By Media Newser Philippines Team | Thursday, July 31, 2014

Our anonymous tip box filled up so quickly with questions (not news tips) regarding Solar News' omission of the word 'Solar' on their daily programs, most noticeably on their flagship newscast Solar Network News, which is now generically called Network News.

One of our readers asked: "MNP please check Solar News. Seems like they're no longer using the SOLAR name anymore. Maybe because it's redundant na or baka magsasara na sila di kaya? Network News ang tawag nila parang ang off since lahat naman ng newscasts ay network news. May news po ba kayo?"

According to a network insider, Solar News is "under a transition period." With Ramon Ang's acquisition of the news network last year from the Tiengs, the Sunny Network will have to retire the brand name Solar News.

Not to be confused with TV5's troubling News5, Solar News will be renamed News9. It may change though according to our insider, but we heard that planning is already underway for the grand relaunch set for the last quarter of 2014.

Also in the works: Kapampangan News anchored by beauty queen Nicolette Henson, and a monthly documentary program to be helmed by Nicole Curato, Jing Magsaysay, Pia Hontiveros, Mitzi Borromeo and David Santos airing this August.

There's also a possibility of a merger with GMA News according to a reliable source who spoke to us on condition of anonymity. "With RSA acquiring a share of GMA Network, a merger is inevitable, unless RSA will return Solar back to the Tiengs."

Our source also said, "If you look at it from a business standpoint, GMA should and will surely be given more priority. They have Peabodys, more name recall, credibility, big name journalists and of course big ratings."

We've reached out to Solar News for a comment on this story and will let you know when we hear back from them.
